Joseph H. Thibodeau is in his 50th year in the practice of law, limiting his practice, principally, for all but two of those years, to civil and criminal tax and aviation controversy resolution.

An undergraduate alumnus of the College of the Holy Cross, upon graduation (J.D., cum laude) from the University of Detroit, School of Law, he served for four (4) years under the Attorney General’s Honors Program as a trial attorney in the Tax Division of the United States Department of Justice, Washington, D.C.

For two (2) years thereafter, Mr. Thibodeau was the legal advisor to the Governor (Honorable William G. Milliken) of the State of Michigan. In 1971, he commenced private practice in Denver.

A frequent lecturer and author, from 1983 to 1998 he served as an adjunct professor (Civil and Criminal Tax Procedure) in the University of Denver Graduate Tax Program. From 1983 – 2009, he appeared annually as a panelist and moderator on the American Bar Association (Tax Section) National Institute on Criminal Tax Fraud.

Mr. Thibodeau is a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, and, for 30 years, has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America); Who’s Who In Practicing Attorneys; and, Martindale-Hubbell’s Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers. In May, 2001, he was listed in 5280, Denver’s Mile-High Magazine as one of Denver, Colorado’s top 100 lawyers; and, from 2006 to the present, as one of Colorado’s Super Lawyers, in the same publication. In 2012, he was honored by Best Lawyers as “Denver Best Lawyers Litigation and Tax Controversy – Tax Lawyer of the Year”. In 2013, he was awarded the ABA Tax Section, Jules Ritholz Memorial Merit Award, and the CBA Tax Section, James E. Bye Lifetime Achievement Award, both in recognition of outstanding dedication, achievements, and integrity in the field of civil and criminal tax controversies. In 2015 Mr. Thibodeau was selected by 5280 as Denver’s Top Lawyers.

An active (airline transport rated) pilot, Mr. Thibodeau also represents airmen and entities in FAA enforcement proceedings, civil and criminal. In that connection, Mr. Thibodeau is designated as an Airplane Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) panel attorney. He is listed in Who’s Who In Aviation and Aerospace, is a charter member of the Air and Space Law Forum, has served on the Executive Committee of the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, and is a member of the Silver Wings Fraternity and of the NBAA.

Mr. Thibodeau is a member of the Michigan, Colorado (Taxation), and Wyoming Bars, and is active in the ABA (Taxation, Litigation, Criminal Justice Sections), the Federal Bar Association, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Lawyer/Pilots Bar Association, and the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA).

Joseph H. Thibodeau, P.C. is a firm of five lawyers — three associates, each with a Masters in Tax Law (LL.M.) and one of-counsel attorney, a former IRS Special Agent — whose practice is limited to the administrative and judicial resolution of tax controversies, civil and criminal, state and federal.

Its founder, Joseph H. Thibodeau, began practicing in 1966 as a trial attorney, under the attorney general’s Honors Program in the Tax Division of the United States Department of Justice. Mr. Thibodeau began private practice in Denver in 1972 and in 1979 formed Joseph H. Thibodeau, P.C.
